Mako Shark

Mako shark (grey-blue shark).

Family: Lamnidae.

Genus: Mako sharks.

Mako shark is better known as grey-blue shark. However, it still has a few other names: bonito shark, mackerel shark, black winged shark, blue pointer shark. It should also be noted that during the last century experts have described another kind of mako sharks: the Longfin mako shark. Habits of this species are no different from the usual, familiar to us, mako shark. The only differences are: fins colors and their structure. Its pectoral fins are three times larger than usual mako shark pectoral fins.

Experts also suggest that mako shark is a relative and a descendant of one of the most famous sharks of the past: the Isurus hastilus. That marine predator was reaching up to six meters in length and weighed about three tons. It lived on Earth during the Cretaceous period along with some species of dinosaurs.

Mako shark is one of the most dangerous marine predators for humans. The fact is that it is totally fearless and can suddenly attack any prey that looks at least a little bit interesting to it.

The average grey-blue mako shark is about four meters (13 feet) length and weights about four hundred kg (890 lbs). It is not possible to speak confidentially about the lifespan of the shark, but we know that on average, it lives about twenty years.

Mako shark is usually found in warm and temperate seas of the World Ocean. For example, it is most common in the North Sea and the Sea of ??Japan, in the coastal areas of Africa, Argentina and New Zealand. Quite often mako sharks live in the open sea, but every year there are more and more chances to meet the marine predator in the coastal region.

Grey-blue mako shark has a fairly typical and simple appearance: quite streamlined body and a little bit blunt head with wide mouth. Surprisingly, such appearance allows predator to reach a speed of sixty miles per hour, which is beyond the power of most animals on Earth! While moving so fast the shark is also able to perform some incredible jumps up to six meters over the water. You should agree that this is a very interesting ability, because, as known, it is much more difficult to move in water rather than on land.

In fact, in order to move so fast under the water and to jump over its surface, it is not enough to have a streamlined and strong body. Mako shark amazing circulatory system structure is of considerable importance. There is a huge amount of capillaries in predator's muscles which are quickly and continuously warming her blood. As a result, the muscles are able to contract very rapidly and to help in rushing and jumping.

This feature is definitely amazing, but do not forget the fact that such a circulatory system requires constant replenishment of energy, in other words - consumption of a lot of food. That is why the Mako shark is so dangerous for any living being. A lot of attacks of grey-blue shark on people are currently registered in the coastal zone and the open sea.

We suggest you to examine the mako shark body in more detail. Predator's head is completely proportional to the size of the body, it is conical and has quite large round eyes. The muzzle has two nostrils, from which two neat grooves extend. Because of them, mako shark has a fairly strong sense of smell and can easily detect any living thing in the water. Such a head structure is particularly helpful in the open sea, with not many creatures living there.

On each side of the mako shark's head there are five gill slits.

Grey-blue mako shark teeth have the shape of a hook and are slightly everted to the inner side of the mouth. They are extremely sharp, so that the predator can tear its prey just in seconds. Twenty six teeth are located on both upper and lower jaws, but the mako shark uses only the front row. Others are needed in order to use them in case of a loss of front teeth. The two front teeth are the sharpest ones. Then they gradually decrease in size and become more and more triangular.

The body fins of a grey-blue shark are also designed to help her during rapid movements under the water or during a prey attack. Rearmost fin has a crescent shape and has two identical blades which are performing the steering wheel role. Because of that fin the shark is able to reach a maximum speed in seconds. Dorsal and ventral fins help mako shark to maneuver in the water space. Predator also has powerful pectoral fins and one anal fin.

The mako shark body color is very similar to the color of the other grey-blue sharks. Shark color can vary from grey-blue and blue to light gray, almost white. The predator has no swim bladder, and the only reason why it does not sink is because it is in constant motion throughout its life.

The Mako sharks main diet consists of large marine fish: scomber, tuna, mackerel, herring and others. In fact, this predator will never refuse another - larger and more nutritious food. Mako shark often attacks the birds that sit on the water surface, or eat a dead whale, sunken on the bottom of the World Ocean.

The main hunt competitor for the mako shark is swordfish. There is even a sign that if you notice a swordfish in open sea - be extremely careful: mako shark is nearby. We know many cases when sharks were found in the stomachs of swordfish or vice versa. You never know who will be the winner in the fight for extraction, since both of these fishes are quite strong, and will never retreat in any case.

It should also be mentioned that the grey-blue mako shark can eat a variety of organic food. Perhaps this ability gave the sharks a great chance of survival during a time when there was a live food scarcity. Grey-blue shark can actually eat any food, waiting patiently until she will get a calorie and delicious one.

Mako sharks are viviparous fishes. The pregnancy lasts for about a year and as a result, about ten healthy small sharks come into the world. Sharks eat less physically developed brothers inside the mother's womb. Once adult shark gave birth to its offspring, she immediately leaves them, so that they become independent. That is why the young sharks are in extreme danger: they have to not just get their food on their own, but also to be able to defend themselves from older and stronger congeners. Baby sharks are often spending their child life in the shallows, up to the moment when they will be able to fearlessly swim out to sea and get their own food at any time.

Habitat of the grey-blue mako shark

The adult mako shark fears almost no one and nothing. The only living things that can be dangerous for the grey-blue shark - are bigger ones, swordfish and a flock of dolphins as well. Dolphins are known to have incredible speed and strength, not inferior to shark's strength.

Grey-blue shark is a quite dangerous and ferocious predator, so there are just a few creatures that can get along with such a hungry aggressor. They are: sharksuckers, pilot fishes and small cleaner fishes. These fishes often spend their lives on the body of a shark eating her subcutaneous fluids and protecting predator from many parasites. All in all it can be called using one word: symbiosis.

Man never specifically hunted a mako shark. A predator often falls into the fishing nets by an accident, along with other herring fish. However, it is worth noticing the fact that the mako shark has an extremely good taste, and its fins are considered a real delicacy. People have also learned to use the predator's liver, extracting a lot of the necessary for humans vitamins from it.

Most commonly people were hunting the grey-blue mako shark just for sport. The fact is that this sea queen can fight for its life for a long time, resisting people till end. Many hunters and anglers find this process very entertaining and interesting, which gives them a lot of adrenaline.

Mako shark is deservedly considered to be an extremely dangerous and aggressive fish. Many cases recorded so far, when the predator attacked the man and killed him, or at least caused a strong injury.

Because of huge teeth, excellent sense of smell and incredible speed mako shark is extremely dangerous.

An unpleasant tragic incident, a real drama happened in Australian coastal area, in the last century. A whole flock of marine predators has made an attack on the boat with four people. Boat went to the bottom almost immediately and people have made a half-hearted attempt to save themselves. Unfortunately, just one person managed to get to the bank. Other fishermen were cruelly torn and eaten by grey-blue mako sharks.

It should also be noted that mako shark is dangerous not just in water, but also on the ship. During the transportation of the caught shark to the shore, it can behave quite calm and even act dead. However, if one careless hunter would decide to approach her, mako shark would be ready to bite off any part of his body.

People should also be cautious when swimming near the beach. There are many cases when the grey-blue mako shark attacked people while they were swimming in the coastal zone. Constant hunger of the predator is a reason for such behavior. Once, the shark approached so close to the beach so that it was shot at a depth of one meter! Fortunately, no bather was injured by the sea predator that day. And what about the case when the shark jumped right on the sand and tried to bite the sunbathing man! Such cases indicate that marine predators are desperately short of food in the open sea, and they are able to do almost anything to not die from starving and to feed themselves.

However, it is worth noting the fact that in spite of its danger and aggression, mako sharks play a very important role in life of all living things on Earth. That is why the grey-blue shark needs understanding and protection by humanity.
